Chris Mole MP has pressed for an update on the progress of measures to improve access for disabled people at Ipswich Station.

Ipswich has recieved a share of £370 million of investment from the Department for Transport under the 'Access for All' programme. The funding will be used to provide step-free access to platforms via the instillation of lifts and a new footbridge.

The Department for Transport offered reassurance that access to Ipswich Station is a high priority under the scheme, with designs now at a detailed stage abd improvements scheduled for completion as early as 2009.

Chris said:

"It is fantastic that this funding has been made available to Ipswich and I am keen to see the fruits of this investment as soon as possible.

"I have been reassured by the Department for Transport and look forward to seeing big changes made regarding accesibility to Ipswich Station over the coming years.

Responding to Chris' question the Rail Services Minister Tom Harris MP said:

"Ipswich station has been prioritised for Access for All funded improvements between 2009 and 2011. Step-free access to its platforms will be provided through the instillation of a new footbridge and two new lifts.

"Local stakeholders are currently being consulted on the plans which are now reaching a detailed design stage."
